Chapter 1 of The Artifact Trilogy

In which a routine passage through the Viagra system encounters complications.

Contents

[edit] Synopsis

The Efferdhal Lily travels from Halogia to Viagra, en route to Areston. Jacob Ogilvy endangers the ship by getting it stuck in slipspace. Jett Miner saves the ship from being destroyed by its own heat generation, but needs to be saved himself, which Christya Desdemona Heyrdahl does. In Viagra, a brawl breaks out and the ship is forced to flee.

[edit] Abridged Transcript

The following is a transcript of the gaming session on May 30, 2010. It has been edited to omit chatter irrelevant to the game (such as discussion of food), and book-keeping conversations such as skill and equipment selection have been summarized instead of included verbatim.

Characters present:

[edit] Approaching the slipknot

GM
Alright then. So you're all aboard the Efferdhal Lily. Oh, I forgot to mention: the lead for today's episode is Jacob Ogilvy. This means that you can tag his aspects where appropriate, as though they were your own. Mainly, it means that the story will be mainly centered around his goals and stuff, but there's always place for everyone else to be involved.

[edit] Planning the route

GM
You're on your way to Areston. Where are you coming from?
Jacob
Well, we might have just narrowly escaped some Dead Star Pirates and we're coming back with a trove of unusual artifacts. They might be worth something to a museum just for their uniqueness, although no-one really knows what they do yet. So I'm going to spend a whole lot of time just zapping them a little bit to try to get them to work.
James
We're jumping out of Halogia or something?
Jacob
And we're trying not to be standing near the artifacts because we don't know what they do.
GM
One thing you do know that they probably do, thanks to your experiences with Derrick, is that they tend to make slip jumps problematic.
Christya
I mean, I'm not an archaeologist or a spaceship pilot or anything, but it seems that if you're messing around with unusual alien artifacts you shouldn't do it while we're sitting in a tin can with like three millimetres of plasteel between us and a horrible, horrible death.
Derrick
Don't you dare call The Lily a "tin can".
Christya
A lovely tin can. Of course it's lovely.
James
It's a sexy tin can.

[edit] The Space Kraken

Jacob
Come on, I'm an expert. I know what I'm doing. I mean, hell, I got interviewed for saving a ship that got stuck doing something like this once.
James
Let's not tempt the giant space monster fate that awaits us.
Jacob
The artifacts have no connection to the giant space kraken.
Christya
I thought no-one knew what the space kraken was, but you've established what's connected to it? I'd take my hat off if I were wearing one.
Jett
I think the first thing we should decide is, I guess either we're jumping to Viagra, or...
Jacob
Well, we want to head to Areston.
Christya
Why are we going to Areston?
Jett
To deliver these artifacts.
Jacob
The fastest route seems to be to go to Viagra first, and then go to Areston.
Jett
Sure, but that's also the space kraken route.
Jacob
Sure, but on the other hand you could go to Tombstone and be assaulted by the legitimate businessmen.
Derrick
The Halogia-Viagra route is where those problems happen.
Christya
I'm totally in favour of going via space kraken land, meta-speaking. I'm totally cool with getting eaten by a space kraken.
Jett
I'm less so. Because leaning out the side with a fusion gun is not, uh... I don't trust that.
Jacob
But you've done that before! You've got experience.
Jett
Yeah, against pirates, not against a space kraken!
Jacob
I would love to see what happens if you shoot a space kraken with a super-powered fusion gun.
James
Quite frankly, I don't know if it's a good idea to be leaning outside a space ship while we're in the slipstream anyways.
Discussion of Jett's gun. It is determined that, given his Superb Military-Grade Energy Weapons skill, as well as his familiarity with a TL3 system (Culture/Tech, Areston) and his violent background, it's reasonable that he has a very dangerous fusion gun.
Jacob
Actually, what do we know about previous encounters with the space kraken? How do people know it's there?
GM
You don't actually know that it's a creature.
Jacob
So we don't actually know it's a creature, but...
Christya
I'd just like to point out that I'm currently Looking for Trouble.
GM
[compel to Christya] Well, if you can manage to get yourself into trouble by looking for it, I'll give you a FATE point.
Christya
I'll pick a fight with a space kraken. Does that count?
laughter
Christya
I'm just saying, it's worth figuring out what the deal is with the kraken. Jacob seems to know a lot about it. And think of the glory.
GM
I'm bearing in mind that you're currently Looking for Trouble and if that turns into any sort of story effect then it's totally worth a FATE point.
As far as any of you know -- except possibly Jacob -- this kraken, nobody knows if it's actually some creature there, or if it's a ship, or if it's just turbulence that people have called a creature. Also, except for your experience with Derrick, and maybe one or two other instances you've heard of, nobody has ever really had much of a concept of slipspace. It's usually just instantaneous travel from one slipknot to the other. So the idea of being caught in between is not really a popularly known thing, it's just that you found out that... well, apparently that happens.
Jett
Well, while we're waiting here, the Dead Star Pirates are probably circling. So we should, I think, go and brave the kraken.
Christya
All in favour of being tentacle... I mean, slaying the kraken... I mean, nothing going wrong?
Jacob
Well, fine, I suppose I can stop zapping the artifacts until we get to the other side.
James
Yeah, let's wait until we get planetside before messing around with that.
Jacob
We'll do that after testing this in real space.

[edit] The worst crime

Christya
I'm all for not blowing up our precious Arestonian ship, our tie to our motherland. Those of us who are from Areston.
Jett
I spent a semester there.
Christya
Yeah, of course you did. Everyone does.
laughter
Jacob
I don't think I know that part of your backstory, do I?
Jett
Totally, I am a certified university dropout. Sure, I was enrolled under a phony name. But still.
Christya
Academic fraud! The worst crime of all!
Jett
My Killing teacher said I was a natural.
Derrick
He's dead now.
laughter

[edit] Toying with artifacts

GM
So the plan is to go to Viagra, and then to Areston.
Jacob
How long is the trip likely to take?
GM
You have to get to the slipknot, then the actual transport is instantaneous. Then it'll take a while to reorient, cool the ship down, it'll take a few days to get to the other slipknot.
Jett
And all that time will be spent in Viagra, which is a little bit of a safer place than Halogia.
Jacob
Pretty much everywhere is safer than Halogia.
Christya
They try their best, the Viagrans do. I respect their efforts, despite their handicaps.
GM
So what were you most recently doing in Halogia? Why were you here?
Jett
I thought we were picking up these artifacts.
Jacob
We were looking for more.
Christya
Looting the dead?
Jacob
Well, that's kind of what we do. It's not like they're going to come back and take the stuff.
Christya
It's okay, being a ghoul is very attractive.
Jett
He doesn't eat them.
Jacob
You know what would happen if someone ate this kind of biotechnological artifact?
Christya
Did you?
Jacob
No, I've seen someone who did that, though.
Jett
Did they shoot lasers out of their eyes?
James
Hopefully. We can only hope.
Jacob
No, no, they just woke up three or four days later in a hospital with their internal organs swollen to twice their normal size.
Christya
But it's interesting that, having seen this, you don't know about the part in between. It's as though it happened and then your memory of the intervening part disappeared.
Jacob
Well, you know, I was kind of away for the time.
Christya
Maybe taking a nap.
Jacob
Ha ha, no, uh... no. No.
Jett
Organs twice the size... you're saying they made him into a super-person.
Christya
Oh, god, don't tell Viagrans about that at all!
Jacob
You know, there was an interesting side-effect.
Christya
Oh, god, you are a Viagran, aren't you?
Jacob
As a matter of fact, I am.
Christya
Oh, no. Okay, nobody is allowed to eat the artifacts while I'm on this ship!

[edit] Halogia

Jett
What else is there in Halogia, other than, I guess there's all these silicates and whatnot?
GM
There's a lot of mining.
Jacob
You can go down to the lowlands if you don't mind breathing in chlorine and getting your face eaten off. And then you just have to worry about the horrible monsters. Also the fact that if one of those things even scratches your EVA suit that's kinda bad.
Some discussion of Halogia and its fauna leads to some detailing of Halogia Prime It is established that James, who is from a TL2 world, and who has an appropriately violent background and the skills to back it up, has a TL2 combat rifle he dubs "The Thud Gun".
Jett
Big game hunting?
GM
The most dangerous game: HUGE FUCKIN' BEARS!
Jacob
The brain's such a tiny target. I'll neuralize it! While everyone else is running away.
GM
This should kill one of its fleas!
James
Its fleas are five feet long and can suck a man dry in two seconds. Not in that way.
laughter

[edit] Big damn hero

Jett
So I have basically no space skills. So if we get in any space combat...
Jacob
So how the hell did you fight off those pirates?
Jett
I hung out the side and fired at them.
Christya
Firing his gun, in space. I don't imagine he hit anyone, given space distances here, and human reflexes.
James
Well, they were attempting boarding, right?
GM
Energy weapons have less trouble with distance.
Christya
But you still deal with light speed.
James
But if they're boarding, then they're closer. I assumed the shuttle was actually attached to the ship, and he was shooting at the shuttle.
Jett
The point was I escaped and was heroic while doing it. The details are less important.
Derrick
Yeah, that's your version.

[edit] Pirates

Jett
So what were we doing in Halogia? There's apparently evil things below the evil...
Christya
We were negotiating the release of a couple of academics who had been interested in studying the culture of self-motivated profit-driven enterprise cultures.
James
Pirates.
Christya
Yeah. So I was negotiating their release.
Jett
From the other pirates?
Christya
From the pirates they were studying. They showed up with their grant money, and the locals were like, yeah! A couple of idiotic academics decided to do a cultural study on pirates.
Jett
And I guess I was there for security.
Jacob
And I'm there to talk sciencese?

[edit] Plans for Areston

Christya
And you're from the university, right?
Jett
Well, I'm not really from the university.
Christya
I thought you could have been one of those... what are they, porters or something? The guys at university who throw out drunken students.
laughter
Jacob
Well, how famous were your exploits there? When you ran off? Are the scientists going to recognize you?
Christya
Did you just flunk out, or did you kill one of your instructors or something?
Jett
No, I didn't flunk out. I stole all the guns.
Jacob
But do they know you did this? Because if you go there some of the scientists might recognize you.
Jett
I would say that they know that the weapons are gone.
GM
But it's not like you're going to the school of Warrior Science anyway.
James
They don't run a museum. They run an armoury. But not a museum.
Jacob
Okay, I'm just making sure. One of those scientists might have been slightly smarter, he may have been one of their combat-trained guys.
Jett
I was also under a fake name at the time.
James
That's alright. Worse comes to worst we'll just sanitize the area and records.
Jett
Yeah... you can use your little magic box to help me.
James
I can also sanitize some money into my pocket!
Christya
Are you planning to rob my Alma Mater, is that what you're doing here?
James
I'm planning on robbing your planet, maybe, but we'll think about that later.
Christya
Arestonians rob Areston. You guys rob your own shitty planets.
chatter about skills, stunts and equipment. Jacob decides to take Culture/Tech (precollapse). Christya has an artifact that ignores up to 3 barrier points per FP spent.
Jett
To the slipknot!
Table
Yes.
Christya
I just assume we are almost there. I declare it.

[edit] Experimenting with the slipknot

Jacob
I want to check the radiation of the Dead Star itself to see if it's likely to replicate what happened last time.
GM
Do you know what the radiation readings were last time?
Jacob
I theorized it, so I want to check to see if my theories are accurate. Is there anything I can do about that?
Jett
I'm putting on a space suit. Just in case this ship explodes.
GM
When you say you want to check if your theories are accurate, do you mean that you want to time it so that the readings are the way you think they should be to create the error, and see if you're right?
laughter
Jacob
I think it'd be more fun to get it wrong...
Christya
Fortune favours the bold!
Jacob
...but I want to attempt to get it right. So I'm kinda hoping I screw this up.
Christya
How many times have ships gone through this and not had anything interesting happen to them? You're a scientist.
Jacob
Actually, it doesn't screw up that much, because otherwise no-one would ever do this. I mean, ususally, because jumps are instantaneous, or very close to instantaneous, regardless of which route you use chances are you'll make it safely. Most of the time. So I'm going to screw this up, but I'm going to try to do it to be safe.

[00:32:05]

GM
So you know that Jacob is working on getting the radiation levels right, and you know that there are two ways he can do this. Either verify his previous hypothesis, or support his previous hypothesis by getting evidence for the opposite result.
Jett
Hmm. I like the opposite result thing, because it doesn't have us trapped in slipspace.
GM (to Christya)
But you are more into Looking for Trouble.
Christya
I think, you know... Look, he solved the problem last time, And this is not that different.
Jett
And how did that happen exactly?
Jacob
Um... [mumbles]
Christya
In the interest of exploring the potential threat to Areston from this particular kraken, and in my role as the envoy of Areston, I think it is beholden to us to try and get there.
Jett
I told you I'm wearing a spacesuit, right?
Jacob
Alright, let's try that. So, the readings last time were just like this... So let's enter these settings... and push the button.
GM
So you've already decelerated into the area of the slipstream. Jacob, you're trying to...?
Jacob
I'm trying to screw it up. Except for this time I'm actually recording the readings.
Christya
Oh come on, Jacob, it'll be exciting!
Jacob
Exactly, that's why I'm doing it. And the fact that Christya is pressing her tits against my shoulder as she's saying this has NO effect on him whatsoever.
Christya (sweetly)
Hi Professor!
chatter
GM
You succesfully steer yourselves into danger.
Table
Yay!
GM
There is a sickening lurch.
Christya
I'm gambling that the GM's not going to kill us.
GM
You all die.
Christya
That was a sweet game.

[edit] Stuck between systems

[00:36:00]

GM
There is a sickening lurch as the ship jumps, which is not supposed to happen when you enter a slipknot.
Jacob
Did this happen last time?
GM
I think so. There was a lot more mass on the other ship, a lot more people and stuff. And a different ship, for that matter. they all handle differently. The other ship was one of these huge Viagran ships.
James
It's all about size with those people. All about size.
Jacob
It's not all about size.
Christya
Huge and suggestively designed.
Derrick
It's more aerodynamic... I mean, astrodynamic that way!
Jacob
Yeah, there's this thing called solar wind.
discussion of Viagran ship design
GM
There is a sickening lurch, and the temperature in the cabin immediately starts to rise.
Jacob
Okay, good! So now we've managed to reproduce this experiment. We just need to do this a few more times, and voilĂ ! I'm going to get a Nobel prize...
James
Stop screwing with slipspace!
Jett
I activate the air conditioning in my spacesuit. Which I am wearing.
James
I immediately follow suit and get in my air-conditioned EVA suit as well.
Jacob
Great! Now we just need to replicate the process for escape.
Jett
Are we stuck in slipspace?
James
WHAT?
Jacob
A little bit.
James
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. You guys PURPOSEFULLY trapped us in slipspace.
Christya
It's not "trapped". This is an experiment designed to save the lives of many others.
James
By trapping us in slipspace.
Christya
Temporarily delaying us in a repeatable fashion.
Jett
That's like getting eaten by a Titan Bear in order to find out how to avoid being eaten by a Titan Bear.
Christya
Where's your sense of adventure?
Jacob
I'd like to point out that someone has already been swallowed by one of those bears before and cut their way out.
Table
What?
Christya (whispers)
He's a little nuts.
Jett
Okay, So how do we get out of this? Isn't that supposed to happen?
Jacob
Well, we just Technobabble.
Jett
No, I understand that, but what do we do now?

[00:40:26]

Jacob
We just do what I said.
Jett
So do it. Reverse the polarity on the reflector dish. Let's go.
[chatter]
Jacob
I'm laying out these artifacts, and writing up three or four complicated theories, and trying to decide which one I want to try first.
GM
Unfortunately you're having a lot of difficulty getting people to cooperate with you. The temperature keeps rising in the cabin. People are getting more and more unruly, more and more anxious, feeling more and more like they're trapped in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean.
James
Hey, does anyone want to to check what our heatsink saturation is at?
GM
(compels Jacob) Even though you're trying to calm them down and convince them everything's under control, Nobody ever listens to you.
Jacob
No, they never do!
GM
So this fate point is yours if you narrate a way in which that materially hampers you guys.

[edit] Jett goes EVA

[00:41:55]

Jacob
Okay, the heat shields are up to 70%, so I'm gonna need someone to go EVA.
James
Whoa, whoa, whoa, you want us to go EVA in SLIPSPACE?
Jett
I'm not listening to that.
Jacob
So what the hell did you put on your EVA suit for?
James
Screw that. Get us out now before we hit heat saturation.
Christya (to Jett)
We need someone to do this and fix the problem so we can get out of here. I know that you're really good at woring on the outside of things, right?
Jett
What? I... Why would I listen to you? You're the reason we're here to begin with!
Jacob
Yeah, so you're going to have to take off about 30% of the panels...
Christya
What?
Jacob
Technobabble And I think that'll be enough to keep us intact when we finally get out of here.
Jett
And what makes you think my EVA suit is going to protect me from slipspace? It's not made for that!
Christya
No-one's ever done it. You'll be the first one. Isn't this exciting?
Jett
So send the scientist. He's the one who got us into this.
Christya
He's working on getting us out of here. You're the EVA expert.
James
No, no, no, no. Get. Us. Out. Of. Here.
GM (compels Jett)
You're the Big Damn Hero here.
Jett
(accepts compel) *sigh* alright. No-one else is going to do it.
James
You're a brave hero. And write down your observations when you get back.
Jett (gestures)
Yeah, here's my observations.
laughter
Jett
My observation is you're not in charge any more. Fine, I head to the airlock.
Christya
Excellent. Our oxygen will last that much longer.
Jett
On my way I take my helmet off and breathe deeply.
GM
You put your helmet back on and there's condensation from the difference in temperatures, which appears once the airlock closes behind you.
Jacob
Extended duration in slipspace tends to drive humans a little insane.
chatter

[00:45:25]

Jacob
Sometimes subjects become more suggestible...
Christya
I'm sorry, what are you looking at?
Jacob
I'm just writing down what you were saying! And I'm looking at the pad! Mostly.
Christya
I think you should be fixing the problem before our friend out there melts, or whatever it is he does.
GM
Jett steps into the airlock. It closes behind him, and you vent it. The little window in the airlock door goes opaque when you do. When it clears up, you see that the outside of the airlock is closed.
Jacob
Shit, I should have thought to give him a video camera. Oh well, next time!
GM
At the same time, the comm link goes dead. None of you can hear him say or do anything.
Jacob
Wow, it interferes with communication technology.
Jett
Alright. Phase 1: Growing Up.
Christya
What are you doing?
Jett
Starting up a new character.
laughter
GM
He has about 22 minutes of air in his suit.
Christya
I'm not cool with him dying. He seems like a nice boy.
Jett
I'm a big damn hero, is what I am.
GM
Five minutes go by, then six, and there's still no sign from Jett.
Christya
So how is the "fixing this problem" coming there, Doc?
Jacob
Pretty good. I just need him to blow off those panels.
James
Can we even dump heat in slipspace?
Christya
Of course you can. If you have heat in the heatsinks, and you can eject them, then the heat is no longer attached.
James
This is going to cost us a lot of money when we get to the next place.
Jacob
Now I'm doing the calculations to find out: If we come back with only 70% of our plates, given how weird the situation is, are we likely to actually survive? All signs point to... I don't know.
GM
Seven minutes have passed, and still no sign of anything. The temperature inside is still rising.
Christya
I'm feeling a little stressed about this young man. Someone should really go out there and check on him.
Jett
Don't listen to her horrible siren song.
James
I'm going to see if I can activate any of the hullcams to see what the outside looks like.
GM
Are there hullcams? Sounds like a declaration to me.
James
Sure. (pays a FATE point)
GM
Roll Communications at -2.
James
Total of +4.
GM
You get some very grainy footage. It takes you a while to even get an image. The cameras are working, but at first the image is just opaque. You play around with the spectrum settings on the cams. When you tune it down into the infrared band, you get a whole shitload of noise. There's a lot of IR, which means a lot of heat. You tune it up into the violet ranges, and the noise starts to dissipate quite a bit. You see that there's a UV source which, in outline, looks vaguely human-shaped.
Christya
That sounds encouraging.
Jett
Great. I'm almost human-shaped.
Jacob (to James)
You're sure you're recording this, right?
GM
Because there's so much interference, you only get occasional glimpses of it, every few seconds.
Christya
Are there tentacles reaching for the human shape?
GM
No, the tentacles only radiate in the IR band. There's a lot of interference, but every few seconds the interference clears up a bit and you can see a residual reflection of high-frequency radiation off what looks like an EVA suit.
Jacob
Can we see any of the plates?
GM
You can't make out enough details. The plates are inside a housing, and they get ejected out the side. The cams don't point into the housings.
Jacob
So even if they had launched we wouldn't be able to see that it looks any different.
GM
If you saw it as it was launching you would probably see it, but otherwise no. By now it's been a total of 16 minutes since Jett left.
Christya
Okay, well, someone has to go out there.
GM
Right on the 16-minute mark, from one of these fuzzy images to the next, you see a difference. There is a large protrusion from the side of the ship, right where those heat vents should be.
Jacob
Does it look like a vaguely human-shaped protrusion?
GM
It looks like half a human shape.
laughter
GM
No, it's larger. It could be... (to Jett) Actually, roll your Repair, keep it secret, and show it to me and no-one else. (Jett rolls) The shape could have been the ejection of one of the heat plates. It's difficult to tell. At this point, in the ship you would have hear a *kachonk* as it got released and expelled, but the heat inside is up to nearly fifty degrees, and there's noise from the hull starting to buckle.
Jacob
I cheerfully announce that people who aren't in EVA should do that now, because right now the coolest thing in them is our lungs, so the water is going to condense there.
GM
[compel] Does anyone hear you?
Jacob
[accepts] Nope.
James
Sorry, I can't hear you through my EVA suit.
GM
You're all feeling like shit.

[edit] Christya to the rescue

[00:55:10]

Christya
I'm starting to feel a little guilty about sending that guy to die up there all alone.
Jett
And you should be!
Jacob
I'm going to put on my EVA suit now.
GM
For about a minute and a half, you don't get any fresh images off the hullcam because of the interference. After that, when the image clears back up, the shape you thought might have been Jett isn't there any more. You're at 17 and a half minutes now.
Christya
Alright, I'm gonna go EVA.
GM
You figure that at worst it should take about three minutes to get from those manifolds to the airlock. You get into your EVA suit. We're at 19 minutes now. You get into the airlock and the inner door closes behind you. As the outer door opens, again, the widnows goes totally opaque. It stays that way for another two minutes. It's 21 minutes since Jett left. The temperature is now at 52 degrees.
James
It's time to get out of here.
Jacob
No, we still have a minute before we need to...
Jett
Before I choke and die? Yeah, I noticed.
Jacob
We don't want to jump while he's still out there, if he's still alive.
Christya
He's probably not.
James
Fix it, and let us never ever do this again.
Christya
Disagree.
Jacob
Yeah, seriously. I can write a paper out of this.
GM (laughs)
You're just furiously taking notes the whole time. "This is awesome... I mean, terrible. It's very bad. Nice..."
Jett
Luckily nobody's listening to him.
Christya
I, on the other hand, have some great stories for parties.
James
I'm going to copy all the hullcam data onto my personal computer and wipe the drive on the ship.
Jacob
Then we'll just have to do it again!

[edit] A tough decision

[00:58:08]

GM
The timer you set for 22 minutes goes off. It has now been 22 minutes since Jett Miner stepped out the airlock.
Jacob
How long can a person last once the oxygen runs out? How many seconds are we talking here?
GM
Um... a minute or two?
Jett
Given the laboured breating since it's so damn hot in my suit...
GM
That's the thing, is that right now, even though you're in your EVA suits, you're still uncomfortable.
Jacob
Right now even though it's bad for us, it's really bad for him.
GM
The temperature's up to about 57 now, and as far as you're concerned it's more like 42-ish, but that's still pretty horrific. So it's just ticked over to 22 minutes.
Jacob
Can we do anything now, other than jump? No, I don't think I can actually, we really want this guy back.
Derrick
Unless we jump within the next minute, the ship's going to blow up when it exits the slipknot.
James
I'm going to try comms. "Hey, you still out there?"
Jacob
Comms aren't working. Maybe you can work on that.
GM
By the way, the link to Christya went down also. Same thing, as soon as the outer door opened.
Jacob
