Templar
From UTRPG
Beneath the sorcerer-king are hundreds of templars. These fill multiple roles "horizontally" and "vertically". "Horizontally" templars fill at least three roles in most cities; bureaucrats (pushers of paper, storers of grain, removers of waste, etc), police officers and military officers. Each group has non-templar servants. In many cities, templars also fill the role of priests, leading the citizenry in the worship of the sorcerer-king. "Vertically" there are a few high templars, many mid-ranking templars and numerous relatively low-level templars.
Police officers (who, naturally, are frequently surrounded by city guards, thugs, ex-gladiators or half-giants) frequently confront adventurers, the Veiled Alliance, and defilers. They operate agents which spy on the citizenry.
Templars wear cloaks or similar clothing to denote their station and usually carry "holy symbols" devoted to their sorcerer-king. Those of Urik wear yellow, those of Tyr wear black, those of Draj blue and those of Balic white with purple borders. Those of Raam wear anything but templar clothes and move in large groups for fear of riots, nobles, other groups of templar, etc.
Templars are often trained in melee combat in order to support melee soldiers. These templars are essentially clerics with the templar theme. They draw their power from an elemental vortex connected to their sorcerer-king. Some templars are warlocks (such as Gulg's nganga), essentially a form of sponsored arcane magic. Wizards and even mindbenders, rangers or fighters can take the templar theme too.
