The Oregon system is a trinary system, a chaotic place where all large solid bodies have been torn apart by the tidal forces from the three suns. It is a harsh environment, and has little to offer in the way of resources or habitability. Still, it has some inhabitants, some of the hardiest (and perhaps craziest) in the cluster.

[edit] Astrography

Oregon is a trinary system. The system's planets and planetoids orbit a companion pair of stars: a large orange star (β oregon) and a small, bright white star (γ oregon). Companion to this pair, at a distance that takes it far beyond the planetary system, is a hot blue giant star (α oregon).

[edit] β oregon and γ oregon

The β oregon — γ oregon pair are often referred to as the "primary pair", since these lie at the centre of the planetary system. These are both non-standard stars. β oregon was on its way to becoming an orange giant but once it got to a certain size it started losing mass to γ oregon. Now there is a visible trail of stellar material flowing from β oregon to an accretion disc around γ oregon. It is known that γ oregon occasionally produces small novae at irregular intervals, but there has not been one for about 40 years.

[edit] α oregon

This is a blue giant, extremely massive and luminous. It is too far from the system core to contribute dangerous amounts of heat and light, but its gravitation influence causes extreme irregularities in the inner system.

[edit] Nations

  • Corvallis is a habitat-nation and region of the system. They are more militaristic than most other Oregonian nations.
  • Salem is a habitat-nation of Oregon, and seat of the Oregon System Association.
  • Yushi colony is an orbital habitat which patterns itself on the legendary Earth's "China" civilization.

[edit] Politics

[edit] Oregon System Association

The various habitat-nations of Oregon are independently governed, but most have a representative in the Oregon System Association. This is a body with little official power, but serves a crucial function in giving member nations a forum to interact in a neutral context.

The current President of the OSA is Peter Contos.

[edit] History

Note: Oregon uses its own year numbering system, based on conjunctions of its three suns. While it is currently 320 AS by Arestonian Standard reckoning, it is year 756 by the Oregonian calendar.

[edit] Treaty of Coquille (729)

The treaty of Coquille laid out agreed-upon boundaries of the space in the Oregon system, and defined the powers each nation had to govern and administer their territory.

Some relevant passages from the treaty include:

Article 6, subsection 3
Any vessel requiring inspection may forgo manual inspection by providing proof of ownership of vessel and complete list of cargo providing there is no significant suspicion that either piece of documentation is false.
Article 6, subsection 3(a)
Vessels with a valid Luxury Cruise License may forgo manual inspection, subject to the same conditions and exceptions as in article 6 subsection 3. Such a vessel is entitled to request an escort from a Corvallian enforcer ship while in Corvallian space, subject to approval from the acting Space Ward.
Article 12, subsection 7
Any action that would escalate an encounter to an intersystem affair requires approval from the acting Space Ward.
Article 47, subsection 2
Any civilian craft unlawfully treated under the articles of this treaty by any agent of the Space Ward or the government of Corvallis is entitled to file a grievance with the Space Ward or the Corvallis senate judicial committee, respectively. The owner or administrator of said civilian craft shall receive any fines levied to such agent as a result of this action, less reasonable legal and court fees.
